Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news conference held on the 21st march 2012, that Coleman was to take over the role of Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat said that he chose Coleman for the role of companion because she could perform best alongside Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
